As a business owner, the safety of your employees and customers should always be a top priority. One way to ensure that your workplace is safe is to conduct a pre-start health and safety review. This is a comprehensive assessment of your workplace that identifies potential hazards and risks before any new equipment or processes are introduced. While it may seem like an additional expense and time-consuming process, conducting a pre-start health and safety review can actually provide numerous benefits for your business. To explain the benefits of this in more detail RTR Engineering has listed the following points.

1. Compliance with regulations
Conducting a pre-start health and safety review ensures that your business complies with the relevant safety regulations and standards. This can help you avoid potential fines or legal issues down the line, and also shows your commitment to creating a safe and healthy workplace.
In addition, compliance with safety regulations can also help you secure contracts with clients who require proof of compliance. Many companies and organizations have their own safety standards and may require that their suppliers or contractors meet certain safety requirements.

2. Improved safety for employees and customers
Identifying and addressing potential hazards through a pre-start health and safety review can significantly improve safety for your employees and customers. This can reduce the risk of workplace accidents and injuries, which can have a positive impact on morale, productivity, and ultimately, your bottom line. Improved safety can also improve your company’s reputation and increase customer trust. Customers are more likely to do business with companies that prioritize safety, and employees are more likely to feel valued and appreciated when their safety is taken seriously.

3. Cost savings
Pre-start health and safety reviews can help organizations achieve significant cost savings in various ways. In addition to the direct costs associated with accidents and injuries, such as medical expenses, legal fees, and workers’ compensation claims, there are several indirect costs that can impact the bottom line of a business. One of the most significant indirect costs is lost productivity. Workplace accidents and injuries can cause disruptions to workflow, leading to delays in projects and decreased productivity.

4. Enhanced reputation
Implementing pre-start health and safety reviews can enhance a business’s reputation in multiple ways. By demonstrating a commitment to safety, businesses can distinguish themselves from competitors and appeal to customers who value socially responsible companies. In addition, businesses that prioritize workplace safety are more likely to attract and retain top talent, as employees prefer to work in environments where they feel safe and valued.

5. Continuous improvement
Pre-start health and safety reviews can serve as a starting point for ongoing safety improvements. By tracking safety metrics, identifying trends, and soliciting feedback from employees, you can continuously improve your safety practices and create a culture of safety in your workplace. This can lead to a happier and healthier workforce, which can improve productivity and reduce turnover.

If you’re looking for an industrial safety engineering and consulting company, consider reaching out to RTR Engineering. A Pre-Start Health & Safety Review (PSR or PHSR) is a machine safety compliance review for equipment or processes being installed or modified in a manufacturing environment, prior to its commissioning at the user’s location. A PSR is required in Ontario by Section 7 of Regulation 851 - Industrial Establishments, of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (S.7 of O.Reg. 851), under 8 specific circumstances, to be performed by an Ontario Licensed Professional Engineer. The review is typically done at the final manufacturing location, however a preliminary review at the machine manufacturer’s location, before installation, can be advantageous as changes or modifications are more easily fabricated and integrated.
